General and Specific Enquiries
are to be addressed for the attention of the central medico-legal secretarial team at: mls@smlegalservices.co.uk
A letter of enquiry should set out;
⦁ The basic facts of the case
⦁ The injuries sustained
⦁ The ongoing symptoms
⦁ The expertise required
⦁ The volume of medical records to be considered – by reference to the number of pages / lever arch files
⦁ Any court / time deadline you are working towards
Formal Instructions
A formal letter of instruction should be sent by post or email together with HARD OR ELECTRONIC COPIES of all medical records, scans, X-rays, etc – visit our contact page here.
Details of timescales and costs will then be provided for agreement.
Ongoing Support
Queries in relation to ongoing matters should be addressed by email or post wherever possible.
Telephone and In Person conferences and discussions can be arranged with our experts if requested.
Please note estimates / quotations cannot be given without details of the case and the volume of medical records to be considered.

We appreciate that on occasion matters will need to be actioned urgently.
⦁ A client might have only just come to you with instructions just prior to the limitation date.
⦁ Protective proceedings might have been issued and a report be needed to guide the case and for service.
⦁ A pro bono steer might be needed to determine a potentially negligent act or omission or causal link
⦁ A diagnostic might be required before opinion can be finalised (eg: MRI brain scan)
⦁ A report might reveal that further medico-legal input is required
⦁ A statement of costs might be needed for a hearing
⦁ A costs budget might be required for a CCMC
⦁ Estimates of a medical expert’s future fees might be needed for a costs budget
⦁ Informal costs negotiations may have broken down and a bill of costs might urgently need drawing up
